Both in industry and in research, human plasma is used as a supplement to cell culture media and as a component of bioassays, immunoassays or enzyme assays.

Replacing the commonly used fetal calf serum (FCS) with human plasma, in combination with platelet lysate, supports the growth and proliferation of for example mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs).

Autologous MSCs can potentially be used to replace tissue defects, but the procedure carries risks such as immunization and xenogeneic infection. The absence of animal components in the medium can reduce some of these risks.
